We have compiled the following list if Questions and Answers to guide you through the process of dealing with a child getting their license.

Q-  At what age can my son/daughter enroll in a Driver's Education Program?
A- The child must be at least 15 years and 9 months before enrolling in the driver's education program.

Q-  My son/daughter just turned 16 what do they need to do to get their Learner's Permit?
A- You should take the child to a local branch of the Registry of Motor Vehicles, at which point they will be required to fill out an application to take there Learner's Permit Test. You will also have to sign the application giving your consent for the minor child to take the test. You should also bring along the child's birth certificate and social security card (both of these items are required as identification). Upon completing the application and paying the fee ($30.00) your child will then have to pass a vision exam (administered at the RMV) and a written exam. This exam consists of 20 questions drawn from the RMV permit question bank and is administered on the registry computer system. The passing score for this test is 70% or 14 questions out of 20 correct.

Q-  So, my son/daughter now has their permit what should I do next?
A- Although having a Learner's Permit is not a pre-requisite to enrolling in a Certified Driver's Education Program, the law in Massachusetts states that in order for a child under the age of 18 years old to get a license they must have completed a "Certified Driver Education Program" have had their Learner's Permit for a period of 6 months of incident free driving (no moving violations, or motor vehicle accidents).

Q-  What actually does the cost of the tuition include?
The cost of the course includes the following:
A- 30 Hours of Classroom Instruction, 6 Hours Behind the Wheel Driving with a Certified Driving Instructor (12 hours if permitted after Aug 31, 2007), and 6 Hours of in car experience observing another student driving. There is an additional charge of $20.00 for the Driver Education Certificate before the certificate can be ordered. we also have instituted a gas surcharge in these times of unstable gasoline prices.

Q-  Are there any requirements regarding additional driving hours?
A- Yes you are required to provide your child with an additional 12 hours of driving time (this will increase to 40 hours of parent supervised driving under the new JOL that will completely take effect Sept 1, 2007). We can not emphasize this fact enough. We recommend that the student take a lesson or two, then use some of the time that they will drive with you before taking another lesson. This allows them to practice what they have learned. The student's lessons with the school should be staggered over the next few months saving one lesson till just before license time to reinforce and review the requirements of the license test.

Q- What type of things can my child be required to do on a license test?
A- The tests are administered by the Massachusetts State Police. Each test is to the State Troopers discretion and can include such things as: Use hand signals, Start the engine, Start & Stop the vehicle, Parallel Park, Back the vehicle approximately 50 feet, Make left-right turns, Start, stop and turn the vehicle on a hill, Turn around between curbs, Enter and leave intersections, Recognize and obey traffic signs, lights, signals, and other rules of the road, use good driving rules, use good driving posture (both hands placed properly on the wheel), Drive in the proper traffic lane and look carefully and signal properly before changing lanes, Maintain enough distance between your vehicle and the one ahead of you, Always drive at speeds to comply with speed limits and varying traffic conditions, Yield the right of way correctly, and Be aware of your actions and those particularly of other drivers.

Q- Can I take my child for a road test in my own car?
A- Although this is an option there are certain disadvantages to using your own car on a license test. The Academy car is equipped with a secondary brake on the passenger's side of the vehicle. If you choose to use your own vehicle you should be aware of the following vehicle  requirements; the vehicle must either have a bench seat with easy access for the examiner to reach the brake pedal or a functioning center pull emergency brake, adequate seating so that the examiner may sit next to the applicant, and so that you as the sponsor can sit in the rear of the vehicle, the vehicle will be examined by the Trooper prior to the license exam to make sure that everything is working properly, it must be registered, insured and have a valid inspection sticker. The examiner has the right at his sole discretion to reject any vehicle that he feels is unsafe for the administration of the road test.

Q- Does the Academy offer road tests in the school's car?
A- Yes. although there is an additional charge for this service the drivers education cars are inspected and examined periodically by the Registry of Motor Vehicles, they also have the dual brake as required for the administration of the tests.

Q-  I have heard numerous stories about the restrictions of a "Junior Operator's License", what are the facts?
A- Simply put the newly licensed driver under 18 years old receives a "Junior Operator's License" or JOL. With this type of license there are certain restrictions which must be adhered to by the newly licensed driver:

1- They shall not have any occupants in the car while they are driving that are under the age of 18 (with the exception of an immediate family member) for the first 6 months after receiving their JOL, unless they are accompanied by a licensed driver over the age of 21, with a valid license to drive that has had said license for a minimum of 1 year, occupying the passenger seat next to the driver. (This passenger restriction is in effect for the first six months after receiving the JOL or until the driver reaches the age of 18, whichever occurs first). Violations of this law will result in a license suspension.

2- They can not operate a vehicle between the hours of 12:30 AM and 5:00 AM, unless they are accompanied by a parent or guardian. If the driver is found in violation of this law they will be charged with operating a motor vehicle without being licensed; this is a criminal violation.

3- They may not operate any vehicle that requires a CDL (Commercial Drivers License).

Q- Can my child drive in NH with a Massachusetts Learner's Permit?
A- Due to the fact that our main office is located just seconds from the NH state line we are asked this question all the time. For clarification we will post the official response from the NH DMV.
