Contact Us:We have compiled this page to help you navigate through the Massachusetts DOT/RMV website finding important Driver Education information. The Links on this page will direct you to the Official site of the Massachusetts Department of Transportation - Registry of Motor Vehicles Division. Once you find what you are looking for please feel free to click the back button on your browser to return to our site. * * * * * * * * * * To go through the process from start to finish the first thing you need to do to get a license in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts is to apply for a Lerner's Permit. This is done by filling out the following form LEARNER'S PERMIT APPLICATION FORM You then take the form to any full service branch of the Registry of Motor Vehicles A BRANCH NEAR YOU You pay the fee of $30.00 to take a permit test on one of the RMV Test Kiosk computers. You also have to provide a original copy of your "birth certificate" and your "social security card" for identification purposes. Other identification documents may be acceptible IDENTIFICATION DOCUMENTS Once you have passed the test you will receive a Learner's Permit, this Permit is valid for two years and allows you to practice your driving skills but you can only drive when you are accompanied by a person over the age of 21, who has a valid driver's license and has had that license for more than one year while they occupy the passenger seat next to the driver. If you are under 18 years of age, you must complete a certified driver education program consisting of 30 hours of classroom, 12 hours supervised driving with a licensed instructor, 6 hours observing another student driving, a parent must attend a mandatory 2 hour parent class, and you are also required to have 40 hours of additional supervised driving with a parent or guardian. You also must have a minimum of 6 months (the RMV calculates 6 months as 184 days) of incident free driving before taking your license test. If you are over 18 years of age you still can only drive with a qualified supervising driver but you do not have to complete driver education although at STOP-N-GO DRIVING ACADEMY we do offer Adult Driver Training. Then you are eligible to schedule a Road Test (if you are taking your test with STOP-N-GO DRIVING ACADEMY this is handled by the school), if you are going to the RMV on your own you can schedule your road test by calling the RMV customer service number at 617-351-4500 when calling customer service it is also recommended that you prepay for your license fees $20.00 for booking fee for the license appointment and $50.00 for the manufacture of your plastic license - this will save you a trip back to the RMV upon passing your test to have your temporary license issued, or you can book your test online at BOOK A ROAD TEST ONLINE In order to take your road test you should show up at least 15 minutes before your scheduled test time, if you show up late the examiner can refuse to administer your test, you must have the road test application (see below this paragraph) and your learner's permit with you as well as the registration for the car that you are going to be using for the test, you should have a car that meets the RMV standards for a road test. The car must be registered insured, have a current inspection sticker, be able to pass a spot inspection (lights must all work, horn, blinkers, and brake lights) the car must also have a center pull emergency brake (although the guidelines say that the car must have an accessible brake we are seeing more and more examiners refuse cars that are not equipped with a center pull emergency brake). ROAD TEST APPLICATION If you have prepaid your license fees as suggested above then once you pass your road test the examiner will mark your permit as a temporary license, and then the RMV will send your permanent license out in the mail usually within 7-10 days (if you have not received the permanent license within two weeks we strongly suggest that you contact the RMV at 617-351-4500 and inquire as to the status of your license as there most likely is a problem. At this point congratulations is in order as you are now a licensed driver. We offer road tests at our schools every couple of weeks and we also offer commercial road tests at many of the local RMV branches, if we can be of further assistance please inquire about our road test services by registering online for the service at our register online page 214-D Main Street STONEHAM, MA 02180 781-245-2300 Branch Manager: Kaitlin (Welliver) Connors 404 Middlesex Rd - Suite 8 Tyngsboro, MA 01879 978-649-4966 Branch Manager: Robert Welliver Administrator: Carl Welliver 781-245-2300 Office 857-236-0236 Cell Phone ![]() driver education, how to drive,
